Abstract

868,607. Respiratory appliances. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Nov. 18, 1959 [Nov. 27, 1958], No. 38260/58. Class 81 (2). Apparatus for promoting respiration or administering anaesthetic gases comprises an expansible reservoir, such as a bellows 1, adapted to deliver a gas mixture to and to receive exhaled gases from the lungs, means for alternately causing contraction and causing or permitting expansion of the reservoir, and adjustable means for limiting contraction of the reservoir. The bellows 1 may be housed in an air-tight chamber 3, gas being alternately supplied to and released from the chamber to cause contraction and expansion of the bellows. The adjustable means as shown comprises a plunger 4, 5 which slides in a guide 6 on the chamber wall 10 and may be locked in a selected position by a collet 7. The plunger may alternatively be screwed into the chamber wall 10 or the adjustable means may comprise a chain of variable length secured to the bottom wall of the chamber and to the free end of the bellows 1. In use, gas is supplied to the chamber 3 and the bellows contract as far as the plunger 4, 5 allows. When a predetermined pressure is reached in the chamber, the flow of gas is cut off and the chamber empties. The bellows expand under natural or forced exhalation from the lungs, the distance traversed by the free end of the bellows, as shown by a scale 8, indicating the volume of gas exchanged during each respiratory cycle. Specification 868,606 is referred to.
