Abstract

A matt surface is produced on a self-supporting film of an organic thermoplastic material by immersing the film in a suspension of abrasive particles in a liquid contained in a tank and subjecting the suspension to ultrasonic vibrations to cause the particles to impinge on one or both surfaces of the film and make minute cuts and pits on the surfaces. The film may be continuously fed through the tank and the suspension may be vibrated by means of a plate which is immersed in the tank and subjected to ultrasonic vibrations. The process improves the ink receptivity of the film surfaces.
