Abstract

A composite pipe with a woven or braided <FORM:0868572/III/1> fabric reinforcement and an inner and/or outer flexible coating is made by applying, to the corresponding side of the reinforcement, a natural or synthetic rubber latex made by thermosensitive by polyvinyl methyl ether and then heating the coating. The latex compositions may be prevulcanized or contain vulcanizing ingredients and are stored at a controlled temperature before use so as to eliminate bubbles. In a continuous process a tubular fabric reinforcement A, e.g. of diameter 100 mms., is woven about a fixed tubular mandrel 3 in a circular loom D, and rises vertically as it is formed. Thermosensitive coating material is introduced into the reinforcement A through a pipe 17 connected to a reservoir 7, and is caused to gel to form an internal coating B by an oven 19 provided with infra-red heating lamps 20. An external coating is formed in the device F, which comprises an annular member 24, supplied with thermosensitive coating material from a reservoir 21. The pipe A, B, enters the coating material through a seal in the bottom of the member 24 and then passes through a sleeve 26 having a tubular extension 27, which may be of glass, and determines the outer diameter of the coating C. The extension 27 is heated, to gel the outer coating, by a jacket 28 through which heated fluid is circulated; alternatively, electric resistances may be used. The pipe finally passes through an oven 6, provided with infra-red heaters 31.
