Abstract

<PICT:0820493/III/1> <PICT:0820493/III/2> A multi-layer fabric-reinforced plastic hose is constructed from a fabric-covered inner core of resinous material by wetting the fabric-covered core with a liquid plasticiser, applying an outer layer of resinous material and curing. The braided core wetted with plasticiser may be passed through a plastisol bath, thence through an evacuated space in order to remove dissolved or entrapped air, then again through the plastisol bath, thence through a wiper die which removes excess plastisol and which may be so arranged as to ensure the completeness of the coating by a supplementary reservoir filled with plastisol carried along by the hose itself, and finally into a heating chamber. The resins specified are polymers of vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, or vinylidene chloride or their copolymers. The plasticising agents specified include esters such as di-octyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate or tetrahydrofurfuryl oleate, hydrocarbons such as partly hydrogenated terphenyls, chlorinated hydrocarbons such as chlorinated diphenyls or ethers such as benzyl ether. As shown (Fig. 3), an extruded inner core 11 is passed first through a cooling water-bath 13, and is thereafter braided at 18, then passed through a bath of plasticiser 19 which may be heated, a vacuum chamber 20b, a heating chamber 20a, a bath of plastisol 22, a wiper die 27, a further vacuum chamber 25a and final curing chambers 28 and 31. An alternative apparatus is shown (Fig. 5) wherein the core 66, previously braided and coated with plasticiser, passes in turn through a heater 70, a plastisol bath 73, an inverted U-shaped vacuum chamber 80-81, legs of the U dipping into the plastisol in the bath 73, beneath a pulley 90, through wiper die 93, curing chambers 96, 101 and a final cooling water bath 104.
