Abstract

868,511. Coating by dipping. AMERICAN MOLLERIZING CORPORATION. Jan. 26, 1959, No. 2730/59. Class 82(2) In a method of coating a continuously moving material with metal, the material is vibrated, passed into a molten salt bath and thence directly into molten coating metal. As shown, wire or strip 39 is fed from supply spool 26 over roller 24, and then downwardly in contact with follower arm 31 (Fig. 3) which is given a vibrating up-and-down motion by follower disc 33 riding on octagonal cam 30 driven via shaft 29 by electric motor 28. Arm 31 periodically drops on wire 39 and thus imparts a vibrating motion thereto. Wire 39 then passes into salt bath 11 (which may comprise cryolite, barium chloride and sodium chloride), under roller 20, and then up through the salt bath and into molten metal 17 whence it is wound on to take-up spool 27. To coat individual articles, wire 39 may be provided with hooks from which the articles are suspended. The material may alternatively be vibrated by means of electro-magnetic or magnetostrictive devices. The coating of ferrous material with aluminium or aluminium alloys is specified.
