Abstract

868,371. Testing hardness of vegetables. UNILEVER Ltd. April 22, 1958 [April 24, 1957], No. 13083/57. Class 106 (2). A tenderometer comprises a test cell 4 in which the material to be tested can be subjected to a shearing force by linear movement of a member 10, the test cell being displaced under the influence of this force, an hydraulic load cell 25 which provides a yieldable resistance to movements of the test cell 4, and an indicator 27 connected to the load cell 25 to indicate the shearing force. A known weight of raw peas is placed in the test cell 4 which rests by means of bushes 23 on a platform 22 slidable on guides 21. The platform in turn rests on the hydraulic load cell 25 connected to the pressure gauge 22. The member 10 has a number of evenly-spaced blades 11 which are guided in the walls of the cell 4 and pass through slots in the top and bottom plates 3, 2 thereof. A spindle 17 is rotated by hand or by motor and drives the member 10 through the peas, the force exerted on the cell 4 being indicated on the gauge 27. In a second embodiment (not shown), switch means are provided to determine the limits of the stroke of the member 10, which is motor-driven.
