Heat flow from a hot-liquid pump 2 to the driving-motor 4 is minimized by supporting the motor casing 7 on the pump back-plate 5 by means of a tubular pressurized casing 8 having a minimum clearance to the shaft 3. Lateral rigidity is provided by an outer guide tube 9 in which the motor may slide axially to accommodate thermal movements. The casing 8 may be detached from the pump back-plate or the motor casing or both so that the motor may be withdrawn. Cooling.-Cooling fluid is circulated within the motor casing by impeller 10, and passes through thrust bearing 11, bearing 13, the rotor gap, bearing 16, and thence through a tortuous path formed by baffles 19 in the space 18 between the motor stator and the casing 7, back to the impeller. Heat is withdrawn from the motor, and also from the sleeve 9 by cooling water flowing in a helical groove 20 between them. The water enters at 21 and leaves at 22, and is sealed in by toroidal rings 23, the helical land 24 also having a continuous rubber seal 25. Direct convection from the pump to the motor is prevented by insulating material 26.
