Abstract

867,900. Photographic emulsions. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E.I. July 7, 1959 [Aug. 27, 1958], No. 23368/59. Class 98(2) A photographic silver halide emulsion according to Specification 867,899 and comprising a binder of gelatin mixed with from 8 to 50% by weight of the total solids of a water-soluble polymer or copolymer of average molecular weight at least 15,000 and containing 80 to 100% by weight of N-vinyllactam groups having 4 or 5 carbon atoms in the heterocyclic ring, contains also as antifoggant a mono- or di-hydric phenolic compound. The antifoggant may be a mono-hydric phenol having a hydrocarbon substituent in the para-position and one,two or three of the remaining nuclear hydrogen atoms substituted by hydrocarbon groups, or it may be a monohydric phenol with a total of at least 10 carbon atoms and having a hydrocarbon group of at least 4 carbon atoms in ortho- or metaposition. Suitable di-hydric phenols may have the formula:- wherein Q is a single bond, -S-, -O-, -(CH 2 ) n where n its to 10, or -CR 1 R 2 - where R 1 and R 2 are alkyl groups of 1 to 18 carbon atoms or one is such an alkyl group and the other is hydrogen, and R<SP>11</SP> and R <SP>111</SP> are hydrogens or alkyl groups of 1 to 18 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl groups or aryl groups. Examples are given of silver halide emulsion layers having gelatin and poly-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone as binder, and containing as antifoggant resorcinol, p-a-cumylphenol, p-t-butylphenol, 3,4- dimethyl-phenol, o-phenylphenol, p-benzylphenol, m-t-butylphenol, 4,41-iso-propylidenebisphenol, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-n-butylidene-bis (2-t-butyl-5- methyl-phenol) or 2,21-methylene-bis (4-t-butyl- 6-methyl-phenol), or a mixture of 2-benzyl-4- methyl-6-t-butyl-phenol and 2, 5, 6-tri-t-butyl- 4-phenylphenol. The N-vinyl-lactam polymer may also be poty-N-vinyl-#-valerolactam or poly-N-vinyl-5-methyl-2-pyrrolidone or copolymers of these with themselves or with vinylsalicylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl alcohol, vinyl-2- oxazolidone, methyl acrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or styrene.
