Abstract
Resins are prepared from a hydantoic acid and formaldehyde, preferably by refluxing in a solvent in presence of a catalytic amount of acid, e.g. 85% phosphoric acid. The hydantoic acids or mixtures of such acids are prepared by treating an a -amino acid or mixture of amino acids produced by hydrolysis of a protein either with urea in alkaline solution or with potassium cyanate. Proline and hydroxy-proline yield ringcontaining hydantoic acids. The resins may be mixed with a urea-formaldehyde resin. In Example 1, dl-leucine was reacted with alkaline urea to produce iso-butyl hydantoic acid which was reacted with aqueous formaldehyde and phosphoric acid. The oily product was mixed with urea, formaldehyde and phosphoric acid to give a solid mixture of the two resins; (2) a protein hydrolysate left from a glutamic acid extraction was treated with urea to give a mixture of hydantoic acids which was reacted with formaldehyde to give a resin; (3) is similar to (2). Specification 867,876 is referred to.
