Abstract
867760 Liquefaction of gases STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 12 Feb 1960 [17 Feb 1959] 5157/60 Headings F4H and HG13 A cryostat for cooling infrared cells, utilizing the Joule-Thompson effect wherein gaseous nitrogen is fed into an inner capillary tube 15 coiled within and extending along the length of an outer tube 11 and open at its far end opposite the closed end 12 of the outer tube which is itself helically coiled. The nitrogen flairing at 2 litres/min. under a pressure of 1200 p.s.i. discharges from the constricted end 16 or the capillary tube 15 and is cooled open expansion into the tube 11, cooling the ensuing nitrogen by contact with the coils of the capillary tube 15 as it flows to the open end 14 of the tube 11. When stainless steel is used for the tubes 11 and 15 which are in thermal contact by virtue of copper brazing the continued cooling followed by expansion results in a temperature of -194‹C. When forming the outer tube 11 into a helix its cross-section becomes deformed so as to grip the inner helical construction which may be a single capillary tube 15 or two or three in parallel with each other.
