Abstract

861111 Gas liquefaction apparatus HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO 11 Aug 1959 [1 Dec 1958] 27472/59 Headings F4H and HG13 Compressed gas, e.g. nitrogen is liquefied by passing it through a coiled metal tube 12 where it is cooled by expanded gas issuing from a metal throttling coil 10 of less diameter than the coil 12 until liquefaction occurs. The coil 12 is formed round a mandrel 14 and has radial fins 16 held in position by a plastics thread 18, the whole being mounted within the liquid-collecting reentrant portion 4 of a Dewar flask 2. The liquid nitrogen serves to maintain cold an infra red sensitive lead selenide plate 5 (see Group XL(b)), secured to the underside of the chamber 4 and connected by leads 7, 9 to terminals 11, 13.
