Abstract

1,168,997. Refrigerating; liquefaction of gases. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 Nov., 1966 [8 Dec., 1965], No. 51953/65. Headings F4H and F4P. Cooling apparatus comprises a spiral of coiled or finned tubing 1 through which compressed gas is passed from an inlet end 6 to an outlet orifice 5 at the centre of the spiral, gas cooled by expansion at orifice 5 being allowed to pass over the outside of tubing 1. The tubing is housed in a casing 2 having a frusto-conical portion 3 into which gas from orifice 5 issues tangentially and in which liquefied gas from the orifice collects to cool an infra-red detector 7. Tangential apertures are provided in the periphery of casing 2 and region 3 to allow gas to escape after passing over the spiral. A spiral baffle may be provided in casing 2 to cause the gas to flow lengthwise of the tubing 1 or, if the latter is finned, deflectors may be provided to cause a radial gas flow. The gas may be air, with carbon dioxide and water removed, nitrogen or argon and is supplied at a pressure of between 2000 and 6000 p.s.i. Stainless steel or cupro-nickel tubing having an internal diameter of 0À01 inch is employed. Casing 2 is described in greater detail with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown). The spiral may be dished into a conical or hemi-spherical form.
