867,698. Applying adhesive tape. CELLOPHANE INVESTMENT CO. Ltd. Feb. 23, 1960 [Nov. 27, 1959], No. 6345/60. Class 73. An apparatus (and a method) for applying adhesive tape to three sides of rectangular boxes advances the boxes intermittently spaced apart a distance sufficient to provide a length of tape to apply to two of the sides, applies tape to one side, grips the tape between the boxes at two points and cuts it between them, and applies the cut ends to a further side of each of two boxes. The boxes, 1 to 13, are advanced along on the rails 73, 74 of a track 70, 71, 72 by dogs 20, 21, 22, on a bar 17 which reciprocates lengthwise and vertically. Tape 58 is joined to a tear-strip 62 at 59 and is applied to one side of a box 2 by a roller 65. Each of the two grippers 87, 89 comprises a flap carrier 102 pivoted on a pin 104 on a support 100. A flap 106 with suction holes 112 grips the intervening run of the tape whilst a cam operated knife 80 cuts it. The flaps 106 then swing out across the track and apply the cut ends of the tape to the front of a box 3 and rear of a box 4 simultaneously, slight movement of the flap relative to the carrier keeping the tape in tension. The knife 80 does not cut the tape exactly centrally and also slits it along a short distance on either side of the rip-strip at the longer end, so that the tab tape end projects out on the fourth side of the box after the short adhesive margins on either side of it have been pressed down by a roller 135. The taped boxes are diverted by pushers 138, 139 past rollers 136, 137 which perfect application of the tape. The gripper 5, bar 17 and knife 80 operate from cams on a single shaft driven by an electric motor which drives the pushers 138, 139 (Fig. 1 not shown) synchronously with them.
