1285739 Dividing wooden panels G BENUZZI 21 Nov 1969 [21 Nov 1968] 57187/69 Heading B5L A method of cutting large boards into smaller single panels comprises advancing the boards P, Fig. 1, stepwise in a first direction through a first intermittently operating cutting device 1 and dividing them by means of a succession of parallel cuts transversely of said first direction into a number of elongate sheets L, and subsequently advancing at least some of the sheets L in a second direction transverse to the first direction stepwise through a second intermittently operating cutting device 2 and cutting each elongate sheet by a succession of parallel transverse cuts into a plurality of single panels T. The boards may be advanced in uniform or variable steps to provide sheets of differing widths and the sheets may be advanced in uniform or variable steps by a single pusher 6 or a plurality of individual pushers to produce panels of differing dimensions. A pair of the second cutting devices may be provided to which batches of sheets cut by the device 1 are fed alternately. A further cutting device may be connected prior to the device 1 for initially cutting boards to length. The devices 1, 2 may each include a circular saw and clamping device as described in Specification 1,232,800. In apparatus described for carrying out the method, boards are lifted in turn from a stack V, Fig. 5, by a suction gripper 24 and carried thereby, along tracks 27 to a position above swingable frames 13 including rollers 14. The boards are stacked on the rollers 14 until a measuring device operates to stop movement of the gripper 24. The frames 13 are then swung outwardly to lower a batch of boards on to the workpiece support 11 of the longitudinal cutting device 1, and then swing inwardly above the batch ready to receive the next batch. The boards are positioned on the support 11 by a device 30 and side pushers, not shown, and then advanced stepwise through the cutting device 1 by a pusher 5. The longitudinal sheets produced by the cutting are pushed on to rollers 42 of swingable frames 40, and when all the sheets produced from one batch of boards are present on the rollers the frames 40 are swung outwardly to lower the sheets on to the workpiece support of the transverse cutting device 2. The frames then swing inwardly ready to receive the next batch of sheets. The sheets are then positioned by devices 44, 130, before they are advanced stepwise by a pusher 6 through the device 2 to form the single panels.
