Abstract

867,629. Photographic diazotype processes and materials. CHEMISCHE FABRIEK L. VAN DER GRINTEN N.V. Jan. 15, 1958 [Feb. 5, 1957], No. 1471/58. Class 98(2) An actinically fluorescent mercury vapour lamp is used as light source for imagewise exposure of material sensitised with a diazo compound of general formula:- where R 1 R 2 R 3 represent alkyl groups with at the most 4 carbon atoms and R 2 additionally may represent an aralkyl group with at the most 7 carbon atoms. This combination of lamp and sensitiser has the advantage that the visually observable end point of the exposure lies particularly near the point at which the material has been exposed just sufficiently for practice, and may result in black images of good covering power and also good resistance to and absorption of ultra violet light if used for recopying. Examples use a Philips "TL65 watt/5" low pressure lamp with diazo sensitisers on paper supports comprising I the zinc chloride double salt of 1-diazo-4-(methyl) (benzyl) amino-3-ethoxybenzene (prepared by refluxing o-ethoxy-N-methyl aniline, benzyl chloride and soda ash in ethanol, evaporating the solvent, distilling under reduced pressure to obtain oethoxy-N-methyl-N-benzyl aniline and nitrosating, reducing and diazotising this) and surface development using phloroglucinol as coupler; II the zinc chloride double salt of 1-diazo-4-din-propylamino-3-n-propoxybenzene the preparation of which is indicated and a phloroglucinol/ resorcinol coupler; III the zinc chloride double salt of 1-diazo-4-diethylamino-3-ethoxybenzene with a coupler for ammonia development. Compounds similar to those of Examples I, II are included in the invention irrespective of the exposure feature.
