Abstract

867,470. Moulding pulp. DIAMOND NATIONAL CORPORATION. Sept. 15, 1959 [Jan. 27, 1959], No. 31479/59. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups VI and XVII] The base of a moulded pulp container comprises an outer layer of relatively non-absorbent pulp and an inner layer of absorbent pulp. The container is formed by the successive deposition of two slurries in a suction mould. A lower portion 50 of the mould is connected to a source of suction and an upper perforated portion 52 supports a wire screen 54 having projections thereon to form cup shaped depressions on the inside of the base of the container. The absorbent layer 60 is deposited first from a slurry of sulphite stock. The less absorbent layer is next deposited from a slurry of groundwood stock. The sulphite stock contains “% to 1% by weight of unsized pulp fibres in water ; the groundwood stock contains 1% by weight of pulp fibres in water, or up to 3% if a thicker slurry is required. The mould may be dipped successively into two vats or the mould is placed on a rotary drum type moulding machine which advances the mould through a vat divided vertically into two sections each containing one of the slurries.
