867,343. Automatic - exchange systems. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE & ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Dec. 24, 1959 [Jan. 9, 1959], No. 866/59. Class 40 (4). Two units of data-handing equipment are connected together over a single path and information is transferred from one unit to the second unit by changes in the current flow over said single path, while information is transferred from the second unit to the first unit by interrupting said path at a selected instant in a time cycle. As shown, an originating trunk circuit OTC is connected to an idle register REG by way of a fired cold-cathode tube VKC and a dialled number is transferred to the register in the form of voice-frequency signals. A marker MKR tests the wanted line, and its condition (engaged or unobtainable) or, if it is idle, the relevant metering rate is indicated in the register by the operation of a selected one of a set of storage elements RSE. The originating trunk circuit OTC has a similar set of storage elements TCSE and each element of both sets is associated with a gate. The two sets of gates are simultaneously pulsed in sequence by a cyclic pulse distributer CPD. When the gate associated with the operated storage element in the register is reached, it gives an output which fires a cold-cathode tube VKR. This extinguishes tube VKC, causing a potential to be applied to the gates associated with storage elements TCSE. The gate which is being pulsed at this instant produces an output, operating the relevant storage element.
