Abstract
866,765. Proportionate mixing of solids and liquids. PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO. Jan. 8, 1960 [Feb. 26, 1959], No. 721/60. Class 86 In apparatus for forming a slurry of solids in a liquid the rate of flow of the liquid varies in inverse proportion to the volume of slurry in a vessel and the rate of flow of the solid is controlled in direct proportion to the rate of flow of the liquid. The liquid is supplied through a conduit 18 to a vessel 16; an orifice 20 creates a pressure difference proportional to the rate of flow. A controller 26 sensitive to the level of liquid in the container 16 actuates a valve 22 to control the rate of flow of the liquid. The solid is fed by a screw feeder 6 the speed of which is controlled by the controller 44 actuated by the flow recorder transmitter 42 which is in communication with orifice 20. Slurry is circulated through the conduit 36 by pump 34, and is drawn off continuously or intermittently through the conduit 40. An agitator 28 may be provided. The apparatus may be used to form a slurry in cyclohexane solvent of a polymerization catalyst (e.g. chromium oxide supported as silica-alumina) which reacts with moisture, in which case the apparatus may be filled with inert gas through conduit 24.
