Abstract
866,547. Pneumatic single-stroke apparatus. ANTHONY Ltd., LUKE, and BELL, C.V. June 10, 1959, [June 23, 1958], No. 20025/58. Class 8(2). The speed of at least the forward stroke of a compressed air actuated piston 1 is controlled by a hydraulic fluid actuated brake piston 2 connected by a rod 3 to the main piston 1 and having restricted conduit means 11 permitting fluid flow between opposite sides of said control piston 2. During movement of connected pistons 1, 2 to the right i.e. the forward stroke fluid traverses a lateral port 12 in the rod 3, a port 17 opening into an axial bore 16 of a longitudinally adjustable rod 14 within the rod 3 and forming part of the conduit 11, and through a lateral port 13 opening into the cylinder space at the other side of the control piston 2. As shown the cylinders 4, 5 move relatively to the pistons at a forward speed depending on the degree of obturation of port 12 by the rod 14 under the control of a pivoted cam lever 21 and an oppositely acting bearing spring 18. During the return stroke fluid is free to pass from the left to the right side of piston 2 through a non-return ball valve 10. Locking during the forward stroke is effected by closing port 12 by rod 14, and cushioning at the end of the return stroke is effected by allowing air trapped between the main piston 1 and the cylinder end to escape through a valve-controlled restriction 28. In a modification the hydraulic fluid passage between opposite sides of the control piston is located within the cylinder wall.
