Abstract

866,457. Ultrasonic flaw detection. ACCLES & POLLACK Ltd. July 17, 1959 [July 31, 1958], No. 24663/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 40(7) . In a method of ultrasonic detection of flaws in a tube two transducers are at opposite inclinations to a plane normal to the tube axis and spaced apart in a direction parallel thereto, and relative movement between the transducers and the tube in a direction parallel to its axis is imparted whilst the tube is rotated. The dispositions of the transducers are such that waves reflected at the tube surface do not enter the receiver and such that compressional waves generated at the tube surface are totally reflected whereas shear waves generated there are refracted. Mathematical treatments relating to two arrangements are given, Figs. 1 and 2, and 4 and 5 (none shown); in the latter case, for use with tubes having rough surfaces, spurious reflexions are obviated by an acoustic screen embracing the tube. The tube may be mounted for rotation in a liquid bath in which the transducers also are submersed, the latter being mounted for translation on a carriage. Each transducer may be a transceiver and flaw indication is given by a cathode-ray tube.
