Abstract
765,906. Testing materials by ultrasonic vibrations. SCHMETZ, B. March 2, 1955, No. 6139/55. Class 118 (2). A method of testing hollow cylindrical bodies such as shells, pipes, barrels and the like for the presence of inhomogeneities comprises transmitting transverse ultrasonic waves into the body at an angle of inclination # to cause internal reflections, as shown in Fig. 1A, and also at an oblique angle α to the longitudinal axis of the body tested, as shown in Fig. 1B. This results in a spiral path of the waves as indicated at Sh in Fig. 2 for through-transmission testing. By adjustment of the angle α or by moving the transducer a short distance from the end surface the waves may be reflected at the far end to travel back to their starting place along a spiral path Sr for pulse-reflection testing. In either case the quartz crystal transducer is moved around the end surface, or the workpiece is rotated, to carry out the test. By turning the transducer (or a coupling wedge) through 180 degrees the spiral path is given an opposite rotation and this enables location of flaws extending purely in the direction of one of the spiral paths.
