Abstract

866,029. Respiratory equipment. AIR REDUCTION CO. Inc. Oct. 26, 1959 [Oct. 27, 1958; Sept. 30, 1959], No. 36267/59. Class 81 (2). An oxygen supply system for use under conditions of negligible gravity, when oxygen in liquid form could not be used owing to problems arising from the absence of gravity, comprises a thermally insulated container 10 connected to a reducing valve 30. The conduit is also connected to a pressure-sensitive switch 32, which causes current to flow through a heating element 135 when the pressure falls below a predetermined level. Liquid oxygen is introduced into the container 10, at atmospheric pressure, to fill it partially only, and the container is sealed, either by screwing on the cap 18 or by applying a closure member 22 to a filling tube 21. When the equipment is required for use, the electric current is switched on and the container is heated until the whole of the oxygen is converted into the gaseous form, it then being at a pressure of between 735 and 1000 lbs./sq. inch and at a temperature between -175‹ F. and -300‹ F. Thereafter, as the gas is used, the pressure is maintained by gradually raising its temperature, under the control of the pressure-sensitive switch 32 and heater 135. The gas issuing from the reducing valve 30 is passed through a heater 26 prior to use in a mask. A suitable form of pressure-sensitive switch 32 is described with reference to Fig. 2, in which a Bourdon type tube 110 actuates a contact blade 116 through a push rod 115, so that it engages a fixed contact 118. When the tube 110 extends, under rising pressure, the blade 116 is allowed to move away from the contact 118, to break the circuit. The pressure at which this occurs is determined by adjusting the position of the whole assembly 126 by means of a screw 130. The gradual rise in temperature, as the gas is used, for maintaining a steady pressure, is used as an indication of the amount of gas remaining and is measured by a thermocouple 18a, Fig. 1, in the container.
