Abstract
865,987. Dental handpieces. GALLAY, R., and STERN, C. July 27, 1959 [Aug. 14, 1958; Dec. 3, 1958], No. 25685/59. Class 81 (2). A high-speed dental engine is characterized by two coaxial ball or roller bearings 3, 4, the inner races 9, 10 of which are connected, at least indirectly and in spaced relationship to one another, to the spindle 15 of the tool to be driven. Nozzles 16, 17 are adapted to direct a stream of pressure fluid, preferably air, between the two bearings so as to drive, directly or indirectly, the cages 7, 8 thereof, and thereby drive the inner races 9, 10 at a speed which is a multiple of the speed of the cages. As shown, the inner races 9, 10 are secured to a tubular member 11 in which the spindle 15 is retained by means of a spring 14. In another embodiment (not shown), a single nozzle directs air against the rotor of a turbine which rotates freely on a tubular member similar to the member 11 but is coupled to the cages of two ball or roller bearings, the inner races of which are rigidly secured to the tubular member. Alternatively, the rotor may be adapted to direct the air received from the nozzle on to the two cages.
