849,324. Dental handpieces. SIEMENSRE1NIGER-WERKE A.G. April 3,1959 [April 5, 1958], No. 11454/59. Class 81(2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A dental handpiece has a head with an air driven tool-carrying turbine 23, carried in open rear and forward ball bearings 18, 19, the rear bearing 18 being remote from the tool-carrying end of the turbine, the arrangement being such that air carrying oil mist passes through the bearings after driving the turbine the air which passes through the rear bearing entering a shallow chamber 29 at the rear of the turbine and an air return channel 36 in the handpiece. Air passing through the forward bearing 19 enters a chamber 30 and passes out of the handpiece in the direction of the end 15a of the tool through a gap 41 and also into the air return channel 36 which extends through the handpiece and a hose to a chamber in a pedestal supporting the apparatus. The pressure in the pedestal chamber may be reduced by a pump. A cover 39 seals the rear chamber 29 from the atmosphere. Air is supplied tangentially to the turbine through a channel (not shown) in the handpiece. The tool is mounted in a sleeve 25 carried by the turbine shaft 22. Water under pressure is supplied through a duct (not shown) in the handpiece and is directed against the end of the tool where it mixes with air directed through the gap 41 to form a spray.
