Abstract

865,787. Cutting-appliances. SUMERFIELD, W. Feb. 4, 1960 [Nov. 7, 1958], No. 35860/58. Class 31 (2). A hand tool for cutting or trimming paper and like sheets comprises spaced guides 1, 2 for leading a sheet to cutter means 6, 7 and a sheet edge guide 16 aligned with the cutter means so that the sheet edge produced by the cutter means serves as the sole guide means for the tool as it is drawn across the sheet. The cut edge of the sheet is maintained in engagement with the guide 16 by means of a resilient roller or rollers 17. Rollers 12, 13, preferably spring-loaded, are provided to engage the sheet before it engages the cutter means. The surfaces of the guides 1, 2 may be flat or ribbed longitudinally and the entry edges 3, 4 of the guides may be provided with markings or graduations. The guide 2 is provided with an exit space 11 to permit a severed portion of the sheet to leave the general sheet plane. The cutter means shown comprise a pair of rotary discs and to start the cut, one or both discs may be given an initial rotary motion. Alternatively, the cutter means may comprise a pair of stationary cutter elements or one stationary element coacting with a rotatable element.
