Abstract

Polymers containing free -CONH2 groups may be cured by reacting with a mercuric salt of nitric or an organic carboxylic acid. The polymers may be homopolymers of acrylamide or methacrylamide or copolymers of these monomers with other ethylenically unsaturated compounds, e.g. vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, styrene, methylstyrene, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, sodium acrylate and vinylidene cyanide. The mercuric salt may be mercuric nitrate, formate, acetate, butyrate or benzoate. The polymers may be in the form of films, fibres or filaments, or may be used to impregnate textiles, e.g. wool and cotton cloths, and paper and cured in situ.
