Abstract

<PICT:0865633/III/1> <PICT:0865633/III/2> Apparatus for gumming a cardboard or like blank prior to the production of a box or lid therefrom comprises two laterally-spaced pairs of superimposed driven rollers between which opposite endwall-forming portions of the blank are to be passed, the lower roller of each pair having a transversely-grooved periphery in contact with liquid or liquefied adhesive and co-operating with a wiper member which whilst leaving adhesive in the grooves aforesaid for transference to the adjacent endwall-forming portion of said blank acts to remove any accumulation of adhesive sufficient to touch the coating upper roller when no blank is interposed. As shown, upper shaft 11, Fig. 3, carries two rollers 20 and lower shaft 10 carries two rollers 17 having grooves 18 and dipping into adhesive in tray 19. Blanks 32, Fig. 2, are carried between conveyer belts 26 and 36 so that the endwall-forming portions pass between the rollers 17, 20. Portions of the blanks not to be coated are deflected and folded back by bars 40, 42. The coated blanks are carried between conveyer belts 26 and 45 and passed to further apparatus for making up into boxes or lids. A doctor blade 48, Fig. 3, is arranged to remove surplus adhesive from the outside of rollers 17 whilst leaving it in the grooves so as to prevent the transference of adhesive to rollers 20 in the absence of any blanks.
