[Also in Group XXV] In a motor car, a steering- column mounted ratio-shift lever 1 is supported by means of a bearing comprising a frustospherically surfaced bush 3 slidable along the lever and coacting with a similarly shaped socket 4 in a bracket 5, the bearing permitting the ratio-shift lever to be pivoted to positions 1A, 1B to select third and fourth ratios, and reverse, respectively, by sliding axially a rod 6 connected to a change-speed gear (not shown), the end of the ratio-shift lever itself sliding in a trunnion 16 passing through the arms 15 of a fork at the end of the rod, the bracket 5 turning about the axis of the rod 6 when the ratio-shift lever is pulled in-andout of the plane of the Figure and the rod 6 is turned to establish a selected ratio. In the position shown, the ratio-shift lever 1 selects first and second ratios in the change-speed gear. A compression spring 21 between the bush 3 and a tabbed washer 18, 19 biases the ratio-shift lever 1 rightwards, so that a chamfered collar 22 thereon engages the edge 23 of a recess in the bracket 5, to prevent the accidental establishment of reverse. To select reverse, the ratio-shift lever 1 is pulled leftwards of the Figure against the bias of the spring 21, until the chamfered collar 22 lies beyond the edge of the recess 23, when the ratio-shift lever can be pivoted upwards to the position 1B. A moulded resin casing 26 sur. rounds the forked head 15 of the control rod 6, and is secured to the bracket 5 by screws 27.
