Abstract

754,463. Change-speed control. VAUXHALL MOTORS, Ltd. Dec. 15, 1954 [Feb. 24. 1954], No. 5376/54. - Class 80(2) A vehicle gear-shift lever 7, which selects and operates secondjhigh and low-reverse gear strikes by sliding and turning movements respectively of a shift-rod 3, mounted alongside the steering-column 1 within a fixed cover 2, is univer- . sally pivoted intermediate its ends about a fixed pivot bolt 9 coincident with the axis of the shift-rod 3, and is hinged at its bent-over inner end to the shift-rod 3 about an axis 10a which is tangential to the axis 9 and lies on the opposite side of the steering-column, the hinge member 6 being carried on an encircling ring 5 fast with the shift-rod 3. The universal pivot bolt 9 is carried by a part 19 of the fixed cover 2, and clamps for universal movement a cupped part 12 of the shift-lever 7. The lower end of the shift-rod 3 is adjustably clamped at 25 in a socketed part 23, a key 22 pressed out of the rod preventing relative rotation. The socketed part 23 slides and turns in spaced plates 29, 31, the former attached to the cover 2 and vehicle floor. A clutch-pin 39 on the socket part 23 engages selectively notches 37, 38 in sleeves 35. 36 mounted for rotation only, and linked at 40, 41 to the respective gear-strikers. A tension-spring 26 acting on the bolt 27 of the clamp 25 biases towards the sleeve 35 selecting second and high speeds.
