Abstract

865,574. Injection moulding. BATTENFELD, W. May 30, 1958 [June 13, 1957], No. 17424/58. Class 87(2). In apparatus comprising an annular injection plunger 11 and a torpedo 16 in a heated plasticizing chamber 22, the torpedo 16 is mounted cantilever fashion on one side behind a material supply shaft 10. The torpedo may be rotatable to knead the material and provided with oppositely directed spiral grooves 24, 25 at its ends tending to direct material towards the centre of the torpedo. This region may have axially extending kneading grooves 26 which co-operate with similar grooves 29 on the wall of chamber 22. The plasticizing action may be increased by grooving the chamber wall at 27, 28 in the opposite directions to the torpedo grooves 24, 25 respectively. The annular plunger 11 and its mounting 14 are advanced by a crank (not shown) acting through levers 15, 15<SP>1</SP>. An extension shaft 19 of the torpedo 16 carries drive means 17, and a screw 20 for ejecting any dust collecting between the shaft 19 and plunger 11.
