In an hydraulic vane device the surface in the chamber with which the outer edge of the vane, 23, cooperates comprises a separate arcuate member, 27, mounted in the housing and concentric about the vane shaft 18. A closed sectorshaped chamber 16, Fig. 3, comprises base member 12 and cover 13 co-operating with a hollow body 10 through steel gaskets 14 incorporating a rubber sealing member 15. A shaft 18 mounted in spaced bushes 19, 20 in the sleeve 17 having an oil seal 21 provides for angular movement and transmits power from the actuator through the arm 22. A vane 23 has at its inner end a hollow boss 24 to receive the splined upper end of the shaft 18 and a peripheral seal 26 of rubber or the like for cooperation with the gaskets 14 and the arcuate member 27, which consists of a metal strip having its centre of curvature coinciding with the axis of shaft 18. The ends of member 27 are held in radial slots or grooves in cylindrical rods 28 maintained in recesses 29 in the housing of such diameters that the clearance 30 between the member 27 and the housing communicates with the chamber 16, but fluid flow between the vane separated compartments is prevented by the shoe 31. To provide for fine adjustment in the clearance between the vane and member 27, the shoe 31 is locked by a screw-threaded pin 32. In a modification, the rods 35 are a close fit in bores in the housing, Fig. 4 (not shown), so that the shoe 31 is omitted and a set-pin 36 engages directly with the member 27, this embodiment being preferred under conditions when it gives less distortion of the member 27.
