Abstract
865,215. Handling nuclear fuel elements. ELECTRlCITE DE FRANCE - SERVICE NATIONAL. July 22, 1957 [Aug. 21, 1956], No. 23191/57. Class 39(4). Fuel elements to be introduced into any one of tubes 2, 3, 4 of nuclear reactor 1 (Fig. 1) are formed into a string and conveyed thereinto by a winch 27 or 28. The winch cable passes down through tube 13, trough 15, and tube 7, and into sluice 8, or 9 the cable then gripping the said string positioned in said sluice and then raising it up till it takes up a position where it hangs within trough 15 and tube 13. The trough 15 may then be displaced so that the cable is released to allow the string to fall into any selected tube. The displacement of the trough is effected by part 11 which is both rotatable and movable in the up and down direction. As shown the apparatus operates to feed two fuel elements i.e. from sluices 8 and 9 simultaneously into the reactor. The string of fuel elements (Fig. 2) positioned in sluice 31 is transferred into a tube 28 of reactor 1 by winch 35 carried by tube 32, the latter being pivoted at 30 on and within revoluble ring 33 so as to have two degrees of freedom. In operation, the cable is dropped down tube 29 to pick up the string from sluice 31 and then is raised to drag the cable up into tube 32, the latter is swung about pivot 30 to the position shown, and the cable is released to deposit the string in a selected tube 28.
