Relates to the production of pressure-sensitive label strips comprising labels secured adhesively to a protective backing strip from which they are removed when required for use. A laminated web 10 comprising a strip 11 of label material superposed on a backing strip 12 is unwound from a reel 13, the two strips being separated by passing them over guide rolls 14, 15. The label strip 11 has its lower side coated with a non-drying pressure sensitive adhesive and is conveyed through a cutting station comprising a rotary cutter 16 and a rotary anvil roll 17. The cut-out labels 18 adhesively adhere to the anvil 17 while the label strip matrix 19, i.e. the waste portion of the label strip, is drawn over a guide roll 20 to a rewind reel 21. The labels 18 are transferred to a transfer roll 23 by means of a stripper blade 22 and suction apertures 24 in the roll 23 and are then fed together with the backing strip 12 between the roll 23 and a roll 25 whereby the labels 1'8 are adhesively secured to the strip 12. This is then severed into the required lengths or, as shown, wound on a reel 27. Modifications are described which eliminate the transfer roll 23 and avoid the labels sticking to the anvil roll. Means 36-39 (Fig. 3, not shown) may be provided for printing the labels.
