Abstract

A sprayable pigmented solution contains a polyvinyl acetal resin (preferably the butyral) of less than 300,000 weight average molecular weight, and less than 15% of dispersed pigment having a refraction index, at the wavelength giving maximum light transmittance, of less than 2,3; 95% by weight of the pigment particles being less than 1 micron in size. The solutions are used for tinting transparent objects e.g. for the safety layer of a wind-screeen. They may be prepared by mixing larger particles of pigment with the resin, some solvent and a grinding agent, milling the viscous mixture until the pigment is reduced to the desired extent e.g in an apparatus as described in Specification 686,234, and then separating the grinding agent. Suitable grinding agents are sand, alundum, sodium chloride or borax. Suitable pigments are phthalocyanines, azo pigments, xanthenes and triaryl methanes. Suitable solvents are alcohols, chlorinated hydrocarbons, glycol ethers, esters or hydrocarbons. Preferably the solution includes a plasticizer, e.g. triethylene glycol di(2-ethylbutyrate), di(beta-butoxyethyl) adipate or dibutyl sebacate. A number of detailed examples are given.
