Abstract

A therapeutic composition comprises an 11-beta, 17-alpha, 21-trihydroxy pregnane-3,20 dione and an alkyl phenol-formaldehyde-ethylene oxide condensate as solubilizing agent. The composition may be made up in aqueous solution for topical application to tissues of the eye, ear, nose and throat. Specified hormones include hydrocortisone, 2-methylenehydrocortisone, D 1 - hydrocortisone, 6 - methylhydrocortisone, 6 - methyl - D 1 - hydrocortisone, 16-hydroxy - 9a - fluorohydrocortisone and 16-hydroxy - 9a - fluoro - D 1 - hydrocortisone, which may be used as free alcohols or as the 21-esters or 16,21 diesters of acids such as acetic, propionic, tertiarybutylacetic, diethylacetic, acrylic, mono-, di- and trichloracetic, succinic, tricarballylic, glutaric, b ,b - dimethylglutaric, aconitic, itaconic, benzoic, phenylacetic, phenoxyacetic, furoic, cyclopentylcarboxylic, cyclohexylcarboxylic and cyclopentylpropionic acids. Additives include antibiotics (neomycin, polymyxin, penicillin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, streptomycin, erythromycin, bacitracin, gramicidin, novobiocin and their salts), preservatives (benzyl alcohol, phenyl mercuric nitrate, benzalkonium chloride, phenylethyl alcohol, methyl and propyl parabens, thiomersal, and p - chloro - phenyl - a - glycerol other) buffers (e.g. sodium citrate) and other drugs (phenylephrine hydrochloride, sodium sulphacetamide, chlorpropenpyridamine gluconate, thonzylamine hydrochloride and sodium propionate). Specification 594,745 is referred to.
