Abstract

864,643. Copying-lathes. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. April 18, 1958 [Jan. 21, 1957], No. 2204/57. Addition to 749,006. Class 83 (3). The apparatus described in the parent Specification is modified in that the cam and follower means for producing the root or shroud portion of a turbine blade operate through an hydraulic servo or copying means instead of directly. A diagrammatic representation, Fig. 1, shows the tool 25 arranged for a transverse first movement on a longitudinally movable member 50. The latter is secured to a piston 51 moving inside a cylinder 52 which is formed with a piston land 53 and is itself slidable within a stationary cylinder 55. The first piston is traversed by releasing, with each revolution of the work, a predetermined volume of liquid from the L.H. side of piston 51 by a cam-operated valve. The second piston 53 is supplied with liquid through passages 106, 107, from a control valve 57, secured to the longitudinally moving parts, and operated by cam-and-lever mechanism 58 from a cam 36 which replaces the cam used in the main apparatus. Piston 53 thus provides the movement for turning the blade root or shroud portion. Since the cam 36 takes very little load it may be made from synthetic resin or other plastic material. The transverse movement of the tool may also be effected by an hydraulic copying device.
