Abstract
864,577. Erecting poles; lever load-handling machines; load-engaging devices. METCALF, P. A. July 10, 1958 [July 23, 1957], No. 22179/58. Classes 78 (2), 78 (3) and 78 (4). [Also in Group XXIII] A work and load-handling stand comprises upright frame members 1, 2 connected by a cross-piece 3 and a workpiece holder 15 connected to the frame by a parallel arm linkage 6, 8, 10. The arrangement permits a gas turbine engine E or other workpiece to be assembled on the work platform 15 in a substantially vertical position and the work to be raised or lowered, subsequent movement of the device causing the work to swing into a horizontal position for loading. The arm 6 of the linkage is rotatable with a shaft 5 which is journalled in aligned bearings in the uprights 2, 3, a counterweight 7 being carried by the arm. The right-angled arm 10 comprises two spaced parts, the forked ends 10a being pivoted to the frame by stub-shafts 12, 13, the shaft 13 being geared to a crank 14a which is turned to operate the linkage. The work-holder 15 is carried by the arm 8 of the linkage, the engine E being mounted for rotary movement thereon. The work-holder comprises a periphery of U-section in which are mounted four peripherally-grooved rollers 17 which are arranged to receive an annular workpiece mounting member 19. The engine is secured to the work-holder by threaded spindles 21 screwed into blocks 20 secured to the member 19 and having spigots which fit into recesses in the workpiece. The frame members 1, 2 are anchored to an horizontal concrete work platform 4 provided with a pit 4a providing space for the engine to swing. Loading rails 25 are provided along which a transport carriage can be pushed. In a modification the stand is made mobile and used for the erection and assembly of poles by swinging them from a horizontal position and dropping them into holes.
