Abstract
A sealable container is composed of a normally solid synthetic polymer of an unsaturated hydrocarbon which is pervious to organic liquids, the interior and/or exterior surface of the container being coated with a thin continuous coating of a copolymer of 75% to 90% by weight of vinylidene chloride and 25% to 10% of acrylonitrile. The synthetic polymer may be polymethylene, polyethylene or polymers of other olefines, such as butadiene, or polystyrene. The coating may be applied as a solution in an organic solvent such as a methyl ethyl ketone by spraying, dipping or flushing; a plurality of coats may be applied. The surface to be coated may be pre-treated with oxidising agents or by flaming. Examples are given of coating polyethylene and polymethylene bottles, the perviosity of the coated bottles being compared with that of uncoated bottles; and of coating polystyrene strips to be made into envelopes or sachets. U.S.A. Reissue Specification 24,062 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,059,706, 2,069,844, 2,547,884, 2,632,921, 2,704,382, 2,715,075, 2,715,076, and 2,715,077 are referred to.
