Abstract
Polymer compositions comprise at least 97% by weight of a branched chain polyethylene and at most 3% of a hydrocarbon nucleating agent, i.e. a hydrocarbon compound or composition having at 104 DEG C. an induction time of less than 40 seconds and a rate of crystallization of at least 40% by weight per minute. The polyethylenes may be prepared by high pressure processes using azo or other free radical catalysts. Specified nucleating agents are paraffins and olefin polymers and copolymers, e.g. linear polyethylenes and polypropylenes. The compositions may be used for blow-moulding films, coating paper, cardboard, tin and aluminium foils and for injection moulding. Tubular films may be prepared by extruding the above described compositions through dies having annular orifices and blowing. Biaxially oriented films of uniform gauge may be obtained.
