Abstract

Paper is sized with a normally water-soluble cationic vinyl polymer comprising -CHX-CX (C6H4CH3)-linkages, -CHX-CX(C6H4CH2CL)-linkages, and quaternary ammonium linkages formed by reaction of -CHX-CX(C6H4CH2Cl)-linkages with a water-soluble tertiary amine, where X is hydrogen or chlorine, the percentage of the quaternary ammonium linkages being 2 to 20 of the total. The polymer may be prepared by chlorinating 10 to 15% of the ar-methyl groups of an ar-methylstyrene homopolymer and quaternarizing with the tertiary amine, e.g. pyridine, trimethylamine, triethylamine, lauramidopropyl dimethylamine, dimethyl octadecylamine, dimethyl dodecylamine, and 2-picoline.
