Abstract

An ion exchange resin-interhalogen complex consists of a strong base type anion exchange resin having quaternary groups as its fixed catrionic sites and having adsorbed thereon polybromo-chloride anions which have an average composition such that chlorine predominates and the chloro groups are replaceable by bromide ions, the resin-inter-halogen complex containing bromine and chlorine equivalent to bromine-chloride. The complex may be prepared by contacting chlorine or bromine with the above anion exchange resin in the bromide or chloride form. The resin may be prepared by chloromethylating a styrenedivinylbenzene copolymer in bead form and then reacting with a tertiary amine. A resin containing trimethylbenzyl ammonium groups and the chloride form may be treated with chlorine gas and liquid bromine. Specifications 654,706, 679,850, 679,852, 679,853, 683,400 and 718,308 are referred to.ALSO:An ion exchange resin-interhalogen complex consists of a strong base type anion exchange resin having quaternary groups as its fixed cationic sites and having adsorbed thereon polybromochloride anions which have an average composition such that chlorine predominates and the chloro groups are replaceable by bromide ions, the resin-inter-halogen complex containing bromine and chlorine equivalent to bromine-chloride. The complex may be prepared by contacting chlorine or bromine with the above anion exchange resin in the bromide or chloride form, and this process may be used to scavenge chlorine from aqueous solutions or the gas phase. Bromine may be adsorbed from sea-water on the resin by acidifying and adding sufficient chlorine to oxidize bromide to bromine. Bromine and chlorine may be removed from the resin by reduction with aqueous SO2 to produce an elutable mixture of HCl, HBr and H2SO4. Specifications 654,706, 679,850, 679,852, 679,853, 683,400 and 718,308 are referred to.
