Abstract

Polyvinyl alcohol filaments having improved heat-stability are made by incorporating in an aqueous spinning solution of polyvinyl alcohol an alkali metal phosphate of acid reaction and/or a condensed alkali metal phosphate of acid, neutral or alkaline reaction in an amount of 0,3-10%, calculated on the polyvinyl alcohol, and spinning the resulting solution into filaments by the wet- or dry-spinning process. The condensed phosphates may be pyrophosphates, metaphosphates, tri- or tetra-metaphosphates, isometaphosphates, tri- or tetra-polyphosphates (e.g. Graham's or Kurrol's Salt), or potassium metaphosphate glasses. If a polyphosphate of alkaline reaction is added, the spinning solution may be adjusted to a pH of 5,0-7,5 by the addition of an acid phosphate or pyrophosphate or of citric or phosphoric acid. The spun filaments are subjected to cold- or hot-stretching, then to a heat-treatment and finally to a hardening treatment in a bath containing a mono- or di-aldehyde. In examples, an aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution containing the phosphate addition is spun through a tantalum jet into an aqeous sodium sulphate precipitating bath and the resulting thread is stretched, while still wet, between roller-trios to four times its original length. The stretched thread is then passed 40 times round a drum heated to 110 DEG C., passed through a stretching tube heated to 230 DEG C. and then wound 140 times round a drum heated to 230 DEG -235 DEG C., the thread being stretched 40% between the stretching tube and the drum. After leaving the hot drum, the thread is wound on a bobbin at a speed such that the total stretch is 6,2 times its original length. The wound product, in hank form, is then hardened in a bath containing 9% of formaldehyde, 20% of sulphuric acid, 22% of sodium sulphate and 49% of water, and is finally rinsed in cold or warm water and dried.
