Abstract

<PICT:0864242/III/1> <PICT:0864242/III/2> Sodium bicarbonate formed in the Solvay process is decomposed by heating under pressure in a hermetically sealed, rotary processing drum 10, (see Group XII). The drum has steam heating pipes 40, 41, an outlet casing 76 having a discharge screw 97 and a rotary preheated valve 112, and an inlet casing 28 incorporating a material charging pipe 24 and screwfeed 33. The material forms a pressure-resistant plug at each end and carbon-dioxide produced under pressure escapes by an offtake 114 in the inlet casing 28 or through the hollow shaft 98 carrying discharge screw 97. Exothermic reactions could be carried out in the drum circulating cooling water through pipes 40, 41 and treatment gases e.g. hydrogen or carbon dioxide may be introduced through shaft 98.
