Abstract
864,185. Twisting dough. BAKER PERKINS Ltd. Aug. 26, 1957 [May 30, 1956], No. 16700/56. Class 87(2). Dough pieces are twisted in pairs by moving the pairs along an axis about which they are also rotated progressively along their length, being prevented from rotation at one end. Dough is formed into cylindrical pieces in a device 1, the pieces are grouped into pairs in a marshalling device 2 and the pairs 4 are fed by a conveyer 5 to a twisting mechanism 6 whence they are delivered, twisted, by a conveyer 10 to mechanism which deposits them in tins 14. Instead of passing through the marshalling device 2 the dough pieces may be fed alternately from the moulding device to converging conveyers which bring two pieces together at the entrance to the twisting mechanism 6, the angle of convergence being preferably equal to the angle of the twist helix. The twisting mechanism 6 comprises, Fig. 3, a circular, rotatable structure 20 carried, by ball races 27, in annular frames 24, 25 and having within it side frame members in which are journalled the shafts of rollers 32, 33, 34, 35 round which pass two opposed conveyers 29, 30. Bevel gears on the rollers 32, 34 mesh with bevel gears 39 (one only shown) which are driven through gear trains from a ring gear 46 carried by ball races 48, 49 on the frame 25. The ring gear 46 is continuously driven through a pinion 52 and chain-and-sprocket drive 57, 54, 55 from a motor 53, the conveyers 29, 30 then being kept in constant movement in the direction of the arrows. There may be four band conveyers forming a channel. The circular structure 20 is rotated from the motor 53 through a clutch 62 and gear wheel 64. A photo-electric cell device 65 at the entrance to the mechanism causes the clutch to engage when a pair of dough pieces arrive, so that as they are drawn between the conveyers 29, 30 they are twisted, their trailing ends being prevented from twisting by a fluted roller 9 driven at the surface speed of the conveyer 5. Towards the end of the passage the clutch mechanism 62 is caused to act as a brake, the twisting ceases and the tiwsted dough is discharged by the conveyers 29, 30 on to the conveyer 10. An endless band apron 16 is located over the conveyer 10 to prevent the dough pieces from untwisting. An eliminator 8, comprising an oblique roller, rejects unsuitable dough pieces.
