Abstract
864,015. Sampling liquids. RAMSAY Ltd., F. Oct. 28, 1959 [July 28, 1958], No. 24163/58. Class 106(5) [Also in Group XX] Apparatus for obtaining average samples of a liquid from a tank comprises a vessel 1 provided with a liquid inlet 4 controlled by a valve 5, the vessel being divided into a liquid chamber 6 and an air chamber by a floating piston 11 biased by a spring 13 towards the base of the vessel, the arrangement being such that as the vessel is lowered into the liquid an equal increment of liquid flows into the chamber 6 for each equal increment of depth of the vessel below the surface of the liquid. The air chamber is divided into two chambers 7, 10 by a rigid partition 8 having vent holes 9 therein so that when the vessel is lowered into the liquid by a rope 3 and the liquid opens the valve 5 and flows therethrough into the chamber 6, the air in the chamber 7 is compressed and passes into the chamber 10 through the hole 9; when the apparatus is raised from the bottom of the tank, the valve 5 automatically closes and an average sample of liquid is trapped in the vessel. The valve may, alternatively, be operated manually by suitable external means. In a modification, the air chamber 10 may be connected to one end of a tube forming the lifting rope, the other end of the tube communicating with the air space above the liquid being sampled. The temperature of the liquid may be taken by including an electric heat-sensitive element in the chamber 6 coupled by a cable, which may be incorporated in the rope 3, to an external dial. If desired, the vessel may be weighted to assist in the sinking thereof.
