Abstract

863,645. Billet piercing. BEISNER, K. July 2, 1957, No. 20853/57. Class 83 (4). Ingots and the like are pierced whilst hot by means of an annular punch 1 which removes a core from the ingot and is cooled during piercing. The punch comprises concentric outer and inner walls, 1, 2, spaced apart by radial ribs 4, Fig. 3 (not shown), on the inner tube, which form supply and return ducts for the coolant. The latter which may be water, air or a mixture of water and air, is supplied through an inlet pipe 8 and discharged by an outlet pipe 11. The punch may have a restricted bore 12 to facilitate removal of the punched-out core 13 of the ingot. In this case the coolant may be discharged through openings 16 into the annular space 15 between the core and the punch. The piercing is effected at 800-1100‹C. An external helical rib may be provided near the leading end of the punch for rotating it to facilitate accurate guiding during piercing.
