Abstract

863,593. Frequency divider circuits. COLLINS RADIO CO. Jan. 1, 1959 [May 5, 1958], No. 91/59. Class 40(6) A circuit for producing an output wave having a predetermined phase relation with an input wave at a desired instant, comprises a source of oscillations having a frequency that is a multiple N of the input wave, a frequency divider chain for dividing the oscillation frequency by N and a gating circuit for feeding the input wave to the divider chain at the desired instant to reset the dividers of the chain to zero. Fig. 1 shows a stable oscillator 31 feeding a chain of binary frequency dividers 21-23 which divide the oscillator frequency to the frequency of an input wave applied at 10. This wave is converted from sine wave to pulse wave form in a circuit 11 and applied to a gate 12 which is opened by means of a switch 14 at a desired instant to let one or more pulses through. The selected pulse, or the last of the selected pulses, resets the frequency dividers to zero so that the counting starts in phase with the input pulse, and the output of the dividers is passed through a filter 24 to convert the output pulses to sine wave form. Where a single pulse only is to be fed through the gate, a switching arrangement may be operated by the pulse which is passed in order to close the gate before the next pulse arrives (Fig. 4, not shown). The circuit may be used in wave propagation studies and in phase pulse communication equipment.
