Class 23 In a clarifier having sludge outlets 28 controlled by a member 9 slidable on the bowl 4, the member is held in position closing the outlets by fluid in a chamber 14, and the member is moved to open the outlets by supplying fluid at pressure to a chamber 10. The chamber 14 is filled with oil up to a level 15, and this oil forms an annulus having an inner surface 25 when the bowl is rotated and tends to hold the member in the outlets closed position. Air under pressure is fed to the chamber 10 by ducts 22, 23 in the bowl shaft 2.
