Abstract

863,415. Laminated glass. DEUTSCHE TAFELGLAS AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT DETAG, and WACKER-CHEMIE G.m.b.H. June 17, 1957 [June 15, 1956], No. 19092/57. Class 140. [Also in Group IV (a)] Splinterless compound safety glass has a flame-retardant intermediate layer positioned between and bonded to two outer sheets or panels of glass. This intermediate layer comprises (A) a polymer of a vinyl halide with a K-value of more than 60, and (B) a vinyl polymer or telomer with a K-value of not more than 50 that will adhere to glass to form a bond of suitable adhesive strength. The two polymers may be of the same monomer, and may be formed in admixture with one another or subsequently mixed. Alternatively layers of polymer B may be interposed as coatings or thin sheets between the polymer A or mixture and the glass sheets. Either or both of the polymers may contain a plasticizer and/or a stabilizer. The polymer A may be polyvinyl chloride, afterchlorinated polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl fluoride, copolymers or mixtures of these with each other, or may also contain minor amounts of vinyl esters (e.g. acetate) and acrylic esters. The polymer B may be of the same polyvinyl halides or copolymers, but may also contain functional groups such as free carboxyl hydroxyl or amino groups, or may be polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl acetate.
