Abstract

863,222. Embossing and marking presses. MASSON SEELEY & CO. Ltd. July 8, 1959 [July 15, 1958], No. 22678/58. Class 100(2) A marking press has two working zones in which the first and second operations of the "excess-foil" method of marking are performed, means for guiding and feeding blocking foil through both zones, means for guiding and feeding a carrier ribbon to receive the material to be removed from the foil in the first zone through the first zone but not through the second zone, and means for coupling the means for feeding the foil and carrier ribbon with the pressoperating mechanism whereby the foil and ribbon are fed intermittently and automatically upon operation of the press. The press is intended primarily for marking metal objects. The "excess-foil" method of marking consists firstly of marking blocking foil by pressing it with a heated metal die against a carrier ribbon of waste paper to remove some of the pigment therefrom, and secondly of transferring the remaining pigment from the foil to a metal surface, which may be heated, by pressing the foil against the surface with a cold, resilient pad. As shown the press comprises a movable upper platen 1 and a fixed lower platen 4 and is powered by a motor 6. A supply spool of blocking foil is rotatably mounted in a holder 7 secured to the platen 1. The foil is guided beneath and across the platen by guides 8, between feed rollers 15, 16 and on to a take up roller 28, the parts 15, 16, 28 being mounted in brackets 17, 18 secured to the platen 1. A supply spool of carrier ribbon is rotatably mounted in a holder 10 on the platen 1. The carrier ribbon is guided beneath the platen from front to rear thereof by guides 11, similar to the guides 8, which are so arranged that the ribbon follows a path beneath the blocking foils and at right angles thereto. At the rear of the platen 1 are mounted feed rollers 39, 40 and a take up roller 44 for the carrier ribbon. Although the carrier ribbon is fed only under the left-hand side of the platen 1, as seen in Fig. 2, provision is made for it to be fed under the full width of the press so as to allow use thereof in the manner of the press of Specification 712,971. The feed rollers 39, 15 are geared together by bevel gears and the roller 39 is driven intermittently through a linkage 41 from the main press drive. By a suitable choice of bevel gears any desired ratio of feed of foil to carrier ribbon may be obtained. A belt and pulley drive connects the rollers 15, 28, the belt being arranged to slip so as to maintain uniform tension in the foil as the diameter of the spool on the roller 28 increases. A similar drive connects the rollers 39, 44. The platen 4 carries support blocks 49, 50 at the first and second working zones respectively. The block 49 is mounted in a box 52 having inclined sides 54 with which co-operate wedge-shaped shoulders 53 on the block. The height of the block 49 can be adjusted by means of a screw 55 which moves the block longitudinally in the box 52 and consequently up or down the inclined sides 54. The block 49 has a resilient fibre covering 57. Stops 58 adjustable in height are mounted on the front and rear of the box 52 and co-operate with plates 60 on the platen 1. A heated die 62 is mounted on the platen 1 above the block 49. The block 50 is heated and a rubber pad 64 is mounted above it on the platen 1. In use a metal object to be marked is laid on the block 50 and heated thereby. As the platen 1 is reciprocated at each stroke the blocking foil will be pressed against the carrier ribbon on the block 49 by the heated die 62 and the design on the piece of foil in the second operating zone will be transferred to the object to be marked by being pressed against it by the pad 64. Since less pressure is needed between the platens at the first operating zone the stops 58 and plates 60 serve to equalise the thrusts on the upper platen 1. Specifications 728,391, 789,907 and 813,651 also are referred to.
